The hugely popular play area is to receive £180,000 in funding from Leeds City Council for a full refurbishment.

The scheme will involve the removal of the existing play area equipment and the creation of a new play area to be relocated closer to the existing tennis courts and skatepark.

New slides, swings and bridges are proposed, with work set for completion in February 2010, in time for children and parents to enjoy the new equipment next summer.

Councillor Ann Castle (Con, Lead Member for Leisure) said: "This is an incredibly popular play area and I am pleased that we are able to provide the funding to update and refurbish it.

"By modernising the equipment we will be providing young children with somewhere new and exciting to play.

Councillor Judith Chapman (Lib Dem, Weetwood) added: "I have been in complete support of this project from the beginning. The new play area will be much larger and will have a new and exciting design scheme with better play equipment which local residents have helped to pick out.

"We have been discussing the details of the park with officers for some months now and I am pleased that the funding has been sorted and we can go with the better option of relocating the play area completely rather than just refurbishing what was already there."
