Hi,

Living Together:
Had some great news about our NPT area.
It scores almost top out of the whole of West Yorkshire Police because you believe that the population live harmoniously together. This is reflected in the low incidence of anti-social behaviour that you report. Indeed, the numbers of the population that feel that anti-social behaviour is worsening has decreased to an all time low.
There is still plenty of work to do and some of you reading this may think what I have just said is twaddle! If that is the case then you need to report the problems directly to us. It might be we already have a handle on the issue in which case we will update you with progress.

What follows next are a few of the activities that we have arranged this month.

Student Neighbourhood Watch:
Student Neighbourhood Watch was launched on the 26th October. This is partnership between Leeds University, Leeds Metropolitan University and West Yorkshire police. The University Unions were successful in obtaining a substantial grant from the Home Office which has allowed the appointment of Student NHW co-ordinators and the purchase of signage and marketing. The idea is that the Student NHW will work alongside the existing watches but provide peer on peer advice and exhibit a good neighbour approach to crime prevention. The project is marketed under the existing Knowledge Campaign.
The initiative has featured in the Yorkshire Evening Post, local radio and in the National Student press. My congratulations go out to the students and their mentors that are involved in the project. Very well done!

Cuppa with a Copper:
Later this month we will run Cuppa with a Copper in the Tinshill and Ireland Wood Areas.
This is about identifying places where we can come and meet with you such as established meeting or coffee mornings. If you would like us to come and have a coffee with you please let us know and we'd love to come.

Bobby in the Lobby:
Don't worry; there are no more rhyming events. Advanced warning for this one. PCSOs will be at the Arndale Centre, Otley Road, Headingley, from the 7th December until Christmas time. We aim to meet as many of you as possible and whilst doing so prevent shoplifting and purse dipping that usually rise at this time of year. You can also let us know about things which affect you where you live in the secure knowledge that we'll do something about it, or put you in touch with someone who can.

Crime File:
Burglary is our priority in terms of crime. The incidence of Burglary is higher than last year but much lower that this time ten years ago so don't panic. Up to 40% of burglary offences are through an open door or window, more in some areas. Do your bit by keeping your houses secure and this alone will reduce crime, reduce insurance premiums and stop the upset that a traumatic crime such as burglary can bring. Please contact us at our e-mail address if you would like to see one of the team for some crime prevention advice, particularly regarding door and windows or other fixtures and fittings.

Hi,

How are we doing?

I have been in post as your Inspector for about six months now so I guess now would be the time to look at our performance and let you know how we are getting on. Actually, what I am about to write comes directly from you anyway as the result of surveys that you fill out for the police authority. These surveys measure how much confidence in the police and our ability to deliver on issues such as Anti-Social Behaviour and bringing offenders to justice.

I told you back in April that my priorities would be around quality of life issues. They have been. I have introduced new processes and my staff have responded to what you told us. You are more confident in North West Inner now than you were six months ago.

The surveys also tell me that we are keeping you informed more often if you have been a victim of crime and that you are now more aware of how to contact your Neighbourhood Team than you were before. Thanks for the feedback. There is always work to do if you want to provide the best standard of service and we will continue to improve.

Open Day:
The NWI and NWI Hyde Park Open Day was held at the Leeds Carnegie Stadium on Saturday, October 3. If anything the day turned out even better than we expected apart from the high winds that made life a little difficult initially.

The day was opened up by The Rt. Hon Greg Mulholland MP at 11.00am with some kind words. There were many aspects of policing represented; Traffic policing, Off Road Motorcycles, Neighbourhood Policing, Police Dogs and Horses, Public Order Policing, The Special Constabulary. Over 350 people attended. I am very pleased that the Crime Prevention Panel and CASAC (Community Action and Support Against Crime) were able to participate as well as the Fire Service.

There was a raffle in aid of the Candle Lighters Charity for children with cancer that was drawn at the end of the day and raised over £130.00. Prizes were donated by Leeds Rhinos RLFC, Vue Cinemas, Air of the Dog Pub, Hollywood Bowl and the Louisiana Bar and Grill.

My thanks go out to all who organised, helped and attended the event. Special thanks go to Sgt Teresa Dmoch and Leeds Carnegie Stadium.

Crime Issues:
The nights are closing in. We usually see a rise in early evening burglary around this time of year. Please do not be a statistic. When you get into the house lock the door. Keep the windows closed and locked when you are out or sleeping. Remember the offenders do not want to be caught; they rarely enter occupied houses for that reason so let's remove the opportunity for them to steal from you.
